911 calls: 4-year-old shoots mom in Putnam County

Action News Jax has obtained the 911 calls illustrating the frantic moments as a friend tried to get help for the mom shot by her child while riding in a car in Putnam County.

Jamie Gilt of Jacksonville called her friend for help and that's who called 911. It appears Gilt called a friend, saying she has been shot by her son. In the 911 calls, this friend is audibly in distress as she tries to get help for Gilt.

Dispatcher: Where did you hear about it from?

911 Caller: She called me.

Dispatcher: Where did she call you from, though?

911 Caller: She says she is turning into my driveway and she called me from her cell phone. You can't miss her because she is pulling a horse trailer.

Police said Gilt’s 4-year-old got a hold of a .45-caliber handgun and fired. Looking at Gilt's Facebook page shows guns are a big component of her life.

Through some digging, Action News Jax found that Gilt posted comments like, "even my four-year-old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22."

Online, she also said if someone's breaking into her house and tries to harm her or her family, Gilt said she will shoot and most likely kill.

"If you're not safe handling a firearm an accent could happen. And somebody could get hurt," said mother Kasey Fennell.

Fennell is a licensed member of the NRA and said those who choose to exercise their right need to use and operate a firearm safely.

“If you're in a vehicle, you need to make sure that firearm is out of the reach of children at all times. That is actually against the law but you not be in arm’s length of a minor at any time,” Fennell said.

While Fennell supports gun ownership, she said it has come with responsibility.

“This act unfortunately could have been avoided had the firearm been securely stored out of the reach of a child. Somehow that child was able to access that firearm,” Fennell said.

Fennell said firearms should be stored in the glove department or the center console.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office says Gilt was rushed to the hospital in Gainesville, where doctors had to work fast to repair her lung.

PCSO said Gilt remains in the hospital but is doing well. They have not interviewed her yet but say charges could be filed against her for not securing that gun.
