Algae alert for Northeast Florida

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. — The St. Johns Riverkeeper is warning people to stay out of Doctors Lake in Clay County until they can determine if the algae is toxic.

“I’ve noticed that the water did appear murky,” homeowner Joseph Schofield said.

St. Johns Riverkeeper Lisa Rinaman said they’ll know more once test results come back, but for now, she wants everyone to take heed.

“We’re advising boaters and fishermen to not get near it. You don’t want to boat in it. You don’t want to fish in it. You definitely don’t want to swim in it,” she said.

The outbreak isn’t limited to Doctors Lake. It’s also popped up in Fruit Cove, Green Cove Springs, Goodby’s Creek, Julington Creek and behind NAS Jacksonville.

“Hopefully we can get this thing tested and determine what’s actually in the water and whether it’s safe for the public or not,” Schofield said.

Why should water lovers pay attention to the algae warning? If it’s toxic, it can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems and long-term liver damage if consumed.

Rinaman took a sample Tuesday at Doctor's Lake Marina.

Algae alert! There is a serious algae bloom on Doctor's Lake right now - please avoid coming in contact with the algae...
