Authorities locate vehicle involved in hit-and-run that killed woman

Daniel Johnson, who identified himself as the victim's boyfriend, told Action News Jax the victim  is Rebecca Gomez, who is in her 30s.

Officials said the suspect vehicle in a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman on Jacksonville's Westside has been located.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday to a call of a body found in or near Normandy Boulevard and Lamping Lane, which is east of Herlong Road. Troopers said the body was found with no vehicle around.

Troopers are treating the woman's death as a fatal hit and run. Officials believe the crash happened around 11 p.m. Monday.

Investigators were searching for the driver who hit the victim and left. The vehicle sought in connection with the investigation was a '94 to '98 yellow Chevrolet Suburban or Tahoe pick-up truck with right front damage, troopers said.

The suspect vehicle was found within a few hours of the crash, "down the road from the scene," at a home belonging to a relative of the car's owner, said Sgt. Dylan Bryan with FHP.

The car's owner is cooperating, but investigators are still trying to determine who was driving the car. Damage on the vehicle is consistent with being involved in hitting a pedestrian.

Daniel Johnson, who claims to be the victim's boyfriend, told Action News Jax the woman hit and killed was Rebecca Gomez.

Gomez is a mother of three, Johnson said.

“She was a good person and a good mother,” Johnson said.

The investigation closed multiple lanes of Normandy Boulevard near Lamplighter Lane to traffic for several hours.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is also investigating the crash.
