Background of JSO officer involved in deadly shooting released

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The background of a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer who shot and killed a 22-year-old man in May has been released.

The officer is still under investigation for the death of Vernell Bing Jr., who was shot after a high-speed chase and crash on May 22.

Officer Tyler Landreville was not investigated for anything as an officer before the shooting, which was his first.

It’s not known what happened before Landerville fired at Bing. However, witnesses said Bing was running away from police at the time of the shooting. Bing died in the hospital about 24 hours after he was shot.

Landreville took leave for more than a year in 2010 to serve overseas in the Army. He earned several medals while on duty, including the Army Commendation Medal and Iraq and Afghanistan Campaign Medals.

Landreville wrote several emails to higher-ups preparing for his deployment, all of them signed with quotes and Bible verses. He returned to the JSO after his deployment.

During a reduction of force in 2011, Landreville was laid off but returned in 2013.

One incident in his file was a crash while he was on duty in 2014. He was ordered to undergo informal counseling and remedial training.

At last check, Landreville has not been charged in the shooting. Action News Jax asked JSO and the State Attorney's Office if they have questioned Landreville about the shooting, and they said it is a continuing investigation.
