Basketball cop unveils new court

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Remember the Gainesville cop who whose dashcam captured him playing basketball with kids whose noisy street game he was sent to break up?

The video of him shooting hoops with the kids went viral in January and even prompted celebrity visits by  Harlem Globetrotters and NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.

Now Officer Bobby White has done something else awesome for the community.

On Sunday there was a ribbon cutting for a new basketball court that was paid for by Officer White’s Basketball Cop Foundation.

He says he funded the project after learning that the Upper Room Ministries in Gainesville originally planned to build a court but didn’t have the money at the time.

The full-size court has two commercial basketball hoops and is open to everyone who wants to play.

"It's hoped that this new court will be a safe haven for kids and adults alike to enjoy coming together," said Officer White.

He adds that the location is far enough away from residents that it's safe from noise complaints.
