BLACKSHEAR, Ga. - Police are investigating a murder and attempted suicide after they say a 62-year-old man fatally shot his 26-year-old ex-girlfriend in the parking lot of a Huddle House where she worked, then stabbed himself Monday night.
Special investigators tell Action News this is the first murder in Blackshear in 15 years.
Officers were called to the Huddle House off of Highway 84 around 11:30 p.m. to reports of shots fired, according to Blackshear Police Department Chief Chris Wright.
Belinda Belle was found with several gunshot wounds to the chest and was later pronounced dead at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross. Meanwhile, police found Robert Lee Taylor in the front yard of his home with self-inflicted knife wounds.
Police say Taylor shot Belle while she was on a smoke break outside of the restaurant.
Taylor was first taken to Mayo Clinic in Waycross and was then transported to UF Health Jacksonville, where he is in stable condition as of Tuesday night. BPD is working with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office to extradite Taylor back to Blackshear.
According to a Huddle House employee, Taylor called Belle beforehand saying he'd bring her a Bible. At the time of the shooting, customers heard one shot, then several more shots. The restaurant was closed for four hours after the shooting.
Belle leaves behind two girls, a 9-year-old and a 3-year-old, who are being cared for by Belle's sister. Taylor is the father of the 3-year-old child.
