Clay High student dies after medical emergency at park

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A 17-year-old Clay High student died after a medical emergency at Van Zant Park, the Clay County Sheriff's Office said.

A friend of Matt Purdy, 17, called emergency crews from Ronnie Van Zant Park. Purdy was a junior at Clay High.

Units were dispatched Thursday at 6 p.m. after a friend of Purdy's dialed 911. Rescue officials performed CPR on Purdy before he was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Purdy's mother said she thinks her son may have had an allergic reaction to synthetic drugs.

Tyler Hopkins attends Clay High School. He said it was a somber mood at school Friday.

“I went to the library and they were doing a little ceremony. It was sad -- there was a bunch of people crying,” Hopkins said.

Grief counselors were on hand for students to talk with on Friday at the school.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said an active investigation is ongoing.
