James and Mary Murdock were driving home from church Sunday when they saw a large police scene near their home.
“There were 10 FHP cars,” Mary Murdock said.
Florida Highway Patrol officials said a man was walking in the left lane of US 1 just south of Zidell Road in Callahan Sunday afternoon when he was hit.

Troopers said the driver of a Toyota Tundra hit the man and kept driving south, leaving the man dead in the median.
Troopers found the truck abandoned in a McDonald's parking lot a few miles south of the crash scene.
FHP sent the truck to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for analysis and said troopers are working on finding out who the driver was.
They said the man killed didn’t have an ID on him, so they’re also working to identify him using his fingerprints.
The Murdocks said they’ve seen a few people walking along the road recently.
“Last week, there was a gentleman who was pushing a cart, collecting stuff off the side of the road, just being a good Samaritan," James Murdock said.
FHP said it could be days before troopers identify the man and notify his family.
