Human remains found in backyard of Clay County home

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — Human remains were found in the backyard of a home in the Silver Creek area of Green Cove Springs Wednesday during a missing persons investigation by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies were looking for Janell Adams, who previously lived at the home with her son and grandson.

The search ended around noon after human remains were found.

The Sheriff’s Office said Adams’ son Brian Adams provided the tip that she was buried in the backyard. Officials said he is in custody in North Carolina for unrelated charges. While in custody, he admitted to burying his mother’s body.

“Oh you're kidding me. Wow, that is crazy,” said Sandy Griffin, a neighbor. “You know, we just moved in this neighborhood like four months ago, so it's kind of scary,” Griffin said.

Hannah Sherman did not expect to see the police activity while house-sitting next door.

“Oh my God. Are you serious? I had no idea. I mean I saw cops out there yesterday,” Sherman said. “It's very scary ... definitely will let the owners of the house know about what's going on.”

Officials have not confirmed that the remains are those of Janell Adams. Investigators are not sure if the woman who was buried died of natural causes or if this is a homicide investigation.

Brian Adams is not facing any charges in Clay County and there are no active warrants for his arrest at this time.

The Sheriff’s Office said the people living at the home recently bought the home and have no connection to the case.
