Doctor, woman found dead at St. Simons Island medical practice

A doctor and a woman were found dead of an apparent murder-suicide at a St. Simons Island medical practice on Monday.

Glynn County Police were called to 284 Redfern Village at 5:46 p.m. on Monday after someone reported finding two people dead.

A 911 call reveals that an employee who works at the St. Simons Island Clinic discovered two people deceased inside the building Monday evening.

Police found 63-year-old William Nelson and 51-year-old Catherine Tortorete dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

Police said Nelson, a doctor at the practice, and Tortorete appeared to have died during an apparent murder-suicide.

Police have not said who the shooter was or how the two knew each other.

Public records show that Tortorete had filed a restraining order against Nelson and then dropped it. Records also show that Nelson had filed one against Tortorete.

Many who knew the two personally would not comment about what happened, saying that both still have families who live on the island.

The clinic is surrounded by dozens of businesses, many who say they saw investigators at the clinic Monday evening. Others tell us they learned about it on social media.

"We don't know the situation, that's the sad thing about it, but when you're in a small community this is home and it kind of hurts," says Joyce Matthews, who owns Just for Fun Toys nearby.

Officers continue to investigate.
