Family raises money for mom to leave prison for son's funeral in Nassau County

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — More than $1,100 has been raised on a GoFundMe page to help an incarcerated mother travel home for her son’s funeral.

The woman's son, 19-year-old Thomas Erdmann, died after he was stabbed in Fernandina Beach on Monday.

A 22-year-old Yulee man was arrested on suspicion of murder after Erdmann died during surgery.

The GoFundMe page, apparently created by Erdmann’s sister, said their mom has to pay almost $1,000 for Nassau County deputies to escort her to and from the Gadsden Correctional Facility in Quincy.

“My mom deserves to be at her baby's funeral and I'm asking you all for help,” the page said.

The page said the cost of the escort is $972: $447 for the officers’ gas and $525 for two officers’ time.

Action News Jax reached out to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office about the request for an escort.

A NCSO spokesperson said the sheriff’s office has not received a request.

"The Nassau County Sheriff's Office has to have a judiciary request before we could do this and we do not have request from the judiciary,” the spokesperson said.
