I-75 reopens after crash kills one, injures two others including baby

COLUMBIA CO., Fla. — A driver was killed and two passengers, including a baby, were in critical condition Saturday after a bad accident on I-75, according to the Florida Highway Patrol

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. Saturday north of the US-441 exit.

FHP Captain Mike Burroughs says the accident occurred when the driver of a car experiencing tire problems tried to cross several lanes of traffic to reach the turnaround in the median used by emergency vehicles.

His car was struck by a truck. Both he and the 1-year-old child were taken to Shands by helicopter.

Two others in the car were transported by ground for medical treatment. One of them suffered critical injuries according to Burroughs.

Three people in the truck were also taken to the hospital but their injuries apparently were not serious.

The accident caused a shutdown of northbound lanes of the interstate forcing a detour and creating traffic delays.
