Homeowner shoots at teens playing Pokémon Go in front of Flagler home

Just days after being made available in the U.S., the mobile game Pokemon Go has jumped to become the top-grossing app in the App Store. And players have reported wiping out in a variety of ways as they wander the real world.

Two teens were playing Pokémon Go in a car in front of a Flagler County home on Saturday when a homeowner came outside and shot at them, deputies said.

A man who lives on Primrose Lane in Palm Coast told deputies he woke up to a loud sound coming from outside his home around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.

He said he looked outside and saw a small, white car with brake lights on in the road in front of his home.

He grabbed his handgun, approached the car and heard someone say something like “Did you get anything?” deputies said.

He told deputies that he stepped in front of the car and ordered the people inside not to move.

The homeowner said the driver accelerated toward him. He thought the driver was trying to hit him so he jumped out of the way and shot at the car several times.

The car sped away and deputies were not able to find it during a search of the neighborhood.

Later that morning, the sheriff’s office got a call from a parent who said her 19-year-old son and his 16-year-old friend were playing Pokémon Go when they were confronted by a man who shot at them several times.

She said they didn’t tell her about it until 10:30 a.m., when they saw the car had a flat tire and bullet holes in the rear tire, hubcap and fender.

The teens told deputies they were inside the car on Primrose Lane when they heard gunshots.

They sped away and drove home.

They said they didn't call police because they were not injured and did not see any damage to the vehicle that night.

They said they thought it was someone trying to scare them.

Flagler County Sheriff's Office said the investigation continues and additional details will be released as they become available.
