HUD, Eureka Gardens residents discuss problems at complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Housing officials met with people living at Eureka Gardens Tuesday morning to talk about problems at the Westside apartment complex.

Action News Jax has been investigating problems at the complex since last year.

The meeting began at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and Councilman Garrett Dennis also attended.

HUD officials told the residents that they realize a lot of things need to improve, and a letter has been sent to the owner.

HUD officials also said if there are issues then the residents need to speak up. However, residents said they do make complaints, but things are still broken.

Residents then started getting upset during the meeting.

HUD urged the media to leave about 30 minutes into the meeting, saying that people have complained about the media being present in previous meeting. But the residents demanded the media to stay and asked officials to continue with the meeting.

A recent HUD report said Eureka Gardens, under the management Global Ministries Foundation, received a passing score of 62 on the air quality report. The passing score is 60.

Residents told Action News Jax that the score is unacceptable.

Sen. Marco Rubio sent a letter Monday to the secretary of HUD. He wants HUD to reviewer its inspection process.
