Hurricane Irma aftermath: Neighbors helping hard-hit homeowners on Jacksonville's Ken Knight Drive

In Jacksonville, families are still dealing with Hurricane Irma's aftermath.

Ken Knight Drive on the Northside has a long road to recovery ahead.

The Ribault River runs right through the area and the people living in this neighborhood say when Hurricane Irma hit, it flooded the entire area.

Kids recall what happened after Hurricane Irma vividly.

“People got flooded in their houses,” said third-grader Jurnee.

“It was going crazy cause almost all the water came in our house,” said fourth-grader Alteena.

The water is now gone but it’s marks are left behind. Piles of debris now line Ken Knight Drive.

“It’s creating a lot of rats and roaches … and we’ve got enough as it is,” neighbor Sylvester Johnson said.

Johnson has lived here for 20 years.

“Everything got wet and damaged … clothes and shoes, everything,” Johnson said.

“I filled up my entire RV with donations… clothes, toiletries,” volunteer Jennifer said.

Jennifer is doing what she can to help, dropping off donations that filled an RV.

“Air mattresses, blankets, pillows … if it’s not brand new, then it’s freshly washed,” Jennifer said.

That kindness that isn't lost on even the youngest impacted by Irma.

"Today we’re making thank you signs to the people who gave us stuff for the hurricane and helped us get through the hurricane," Alteena said.

Jennifer said she'll keep bringing supplies and donations out here until she's asked to stop.

A Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert is being held for Ken Knight Drive at Jack Rabbits, 1528 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, at 7 p.m. Friday. Acts performing will include Mama Blue, The Kate Rays, Ruffians and Billy & Bella.

People who attend are asked to bring a $5 cover charge and/or any basic human necessities such as water, food, clothing, diapers, first aid Items, personal hygiene products, cleaning products, bedding/linens, sleeping bags, air mattresses, grills/propane/charcoal and school supplies.
