9-month-old girl's death under investigation in Clay County

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — The death of a 9-month-old girl is under investigation in Clay County.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night to the Intown Suites on Blanding Boulevard.

The infant, Charli May Lee Smith, was taken to Orange Park Medical Center where she died. It is not known how she died.

The infant and her 2-year-old sister were in the room being cared for by the mother’s boyfriend, said deputies. The mother was at work.

Clay County authorities identified the boyfriend as Matt Hamrysky, 26. The mother is Ashley Smith, 22.

No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.

Charlie's father, William, went to Orange Park Medical Center to say goodbye to his daughter.

“It was really bad bruising on the side of her head,” William Smith said. “She had blood coming out of her ears and a little bit out of her nose.”

The cause of death is pending an autopsy report, leaving Smith wondering how his baby girl died.

“Just waiting for answers, trying to get some closure,” Smith said.
