Jacksonville police incorrectly name hostage as suspect in standoff at bank

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams called a family to apologize after a hostage was incorrectly identified as the gunman in a standoff at a Jacksonville bank.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office SWAT team members forced their way inside the Community First Credit Union on Thursday morning after a gunman took 11 hostages.

The man walked into the credit union with a dog around 9 a.m. and locked the doors behind him.

He fired his weapon and told everyone to get into a back room, according to police.

The SWAT team tried to get the man to surrender but eventually had to force their way inside while the suspect was distracted by fleeing hostages.

The gunman then surrendered.

Williams originally identified Deandre Shuman was the suspect.

The agency later said on Twitter that Shuman was not the suspect.

"My heart just dropped cause I mean you're a mother, hearing about your son's name being released as a suspect," his mom La’tarsha Shuman said.

Action News Jax spoke with La’tarsha Shuman during the hostage situation.

She told us her son has worked at the bank for approximately two months.

She didn't hear from him while the hostage situation was going on.

She said she kept calling his cell phone but it was going straight to voicemail.

We talked to her again after she found out the hostages were freed.

"I spoke with him and he's doing well, he's safe. That's all I was concerned about," she said.

The suspect was eventually identified as 23-year-old Nicholas Daquan Humphrey.
