The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a woman died Friday night while in the custody of officers.
The woman, who has not yet been identified, came into the 7-11 at State and Main streets downtown, stumbling and running into things, Chief Chris Butler said.
She tried to leave and set off the store's alarm and walked into the back of the store, where customers are not supposed to go.
Store employees tried to help her out of the store and she fell on the ground inside the store.
She was writhing on the ground and officers responded, putting her in handcuffs. Butler said this is standard procedure.
Rescue crews arrived to give her medical attention and she was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Butler said an autopsy will be done to determine the woman's cause of death.
