Jacksonville man leads officers on chase with sleeping baby in car, police say

A man was arrested Tuesday night after leading a Jacksonville officer on a pursuit that ended with an officer crashing into the corner of a Northwest Jacksonville home.

Robert Isiah Brinson, 18, was arrested on a list of charges, including fleeing from an officer, running several stop signs and driving under the influence, the police report said.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said another person and a small sleeping child were also in Brinson's car.

An officer saw vehicle driving erratically and running several stop signs at 10:17 p.m., JSO Lt. John Gay said.

A police report said the car was stolen during a carjacking less than a week ago.

An officer got behind the vehicle and attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the driver fled, JSO said. The officer pursued the vehicle from West Eighth Street and Blue Avenue to West 14th Street and Pullman Avenue.

While making a left turn onto Pullman, Gay said Brinson's vehicle collided with a tree and an officer wasn't able to make the turn and crashed into the corner of a home.

A person in the home was not hurt, Gay said.

Brinson fled on foot after the crash and another officer apprehended him, JSO said. During the chase, Brinson hopped over a fence before the officer was able to handcuff him, the report said.

The report said the officer had to punch Brinson in the ribs several times because he was resisting the officer. Brinson had a bloody abrasion and an injury on the back of his head. He told police that it was due to the car crash.

The person and the child in Brinson's car were not injured, Gay said. The officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
