The Federal Bureau of Investigation will review the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigation into the deadly police shooting in May in Jacksonville's Springfield neighborhood.

An officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office shot and killed a man on May 22 after a high-speed chase and a head-on crash.

Vernell Bing, Jr., 22, was shot and killed. His son was born two weeks after his death, family said.

Officer Tyler L. Landreville is a seven-year veteran of JSO.

Following JSO's investigation, the FBI Jacksonville Division, United States' Attorney's Office and the Department of Justice will conduct an independent assessment of the incident, according to the Special Agent in Charge Michelle Klimt.

"We have determined that the best course of action is that the FBI will review the incident and provide the results to the Department of Justice," JSO Sheriff Mike Williams said. "This will be done to ensure all processes required by law are followed."

Klimt said the FBI is prepared to investigate and give the results to any federal prosecutors.

Williams said the FBI doesn't typically announce these type of reviews, although it is not uncommon. Williams said they announced it in an effort to bring confidence to the community in the process.

"I'm confident in our process and I'm confident in the administrative review that our investigation will be done in complete accordance with the law. My job is to bring forth to this community a finding that is 100 percent fact-based and the results of evidence in this case," Williams said.

Williams said the community can be assured that the case and the outcome will be fact-based, evidentiary and that the rights of all parties involved will be protected in the process.

Action News Jax learned Thursday that Landreville gave a statement to JSO. However, JSO won't reveal that statement at this time in the investigation and will protect all witness testimony.
