The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said two young children believed to be endangered on Monday night were located safe.
At approximately 8:15 p.m. JSO said it was notified by Mental Health Resource Center at 3333 W. 20th Street that a patient, 24-year-old Sharmeka Jackson, had pulled fire alarms and had left the premises. Jackson was wearing a blue gown. As police searched for her, they went to an address in the 1000 block of St. Clair Street.
At that address, a woman was contacted who said Jackson came to the home, naked and bloody. The person at the home did not contact police, said JSO spokesperson Melissa Bujeda, but police went to that house because that was one of the addresses on file for Jackson.
Jackson's two children, a 6-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy, were at that home. Jackson put on unknown clothing and left with both of the children on foot. Threats to harm herself as well as the children were identified, JSO said. At the time police began looking for her, Jackson was last seen in the area of Superior and St. Clair street heading towards Commonwealth Avenue on foot around 9 p.m.
Police deployed several resources, including bloodhounds, to find Jackson and her children.
Jackson was found on Myra Street just after 11 p.m. and the children were found minutes later at the home of a friend of Jackson's on Myra Street, JSO said.
