JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If there’s one thing Jacksonville has a lot of, it’s apartments. But according to the group Make Room USA, those apartments aren’t always affordable.
In an analysis of mid-size U.S. cities, Make Room USA found that from 2005 to 2014, Jacksonville had more renters paying abnormally high rent than any other city, ranking it number one.
It says not enough affordable rentals are being built.
“I was renting downtown. Now I’m going to move to the Southside. The rent is pretty much the same. You don’t get a lot of variation in between the prices,” said renter April Hutchinson.
Following Jacksonville on the list for most unaffordable rent were the metro areas of Richmond, Virginia, Hartford, Connecticut, and Orlando-Kissimmee.
