Man accused in attempted murder-suicide on Southbank dies

William Chase, 58, died on Tuesday, five days after he reportedly shot a woman then himself in a parking lot on the Southbank.

The shooter in an attempted murder-suicide in Jacksonville last week has died, according to police.

William Chase Jr., 58, died on Tuesday, five days after he reportedly shot a woman then himself in a parking lot on Jacksonville's Southbank.

Chase is accused of shooting 52-year-old Lynn Herriott in the AvMed parking lot on Riverplace Boulevard.

Chase's brother tells Action News Jax Chase was a former undercover officer, and also went by the name Dexter Levin.

Herriott had filed two previous restraining orders against Chase, according to court documents.

Police say the Herriott had just left work. JSO said it started with an argument then Chase pulled out a gun and shot Herriott before turning the gun on himself.

Chad Baumann said he heard two gunshots and saw the entire area fill with police and paramedics.

“One of my coworkers, I hear him screaming, he’s like, ‘Somebody’s been shot, somebody’s been shot,'" Baumann said.

The witness said he and his coworkers rushed to help and found the victim bleeding in her car and crying for help.

“The lady was sitting in the driver’s seat screaming for help, so  naturally my coworker was like ‘help’s coming, help’s coming,'" Baumann said.

Baumann said the shooter was laying nearby in a pool of blood with a handgun next to him.
