Governor Rick Scott was in Jacksonville on Wednesday to meet with emergency management officials ahead of Tropical Storm Hermine making landfall in Florida.
Scott declared a state of emergency for dozens of counties across the state.
Mayor Lenny Curry said he would do the same for Jacksonville at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
"Think about what you're doing and don't drive through standing water," Scott said. "Don't touch downed power lines and call 911 if you need anything."
Scott and Curry said flooding is the biggest concern when the storm arrives.
"Our public works department is ready for that as we speak and the biggest thing is for people to pay attention when the storm begins to move in and make sure they are in a safe and secure place," said Curry.
Scott also says to have 3 days of food and water and a battery-operated radio handy.
The Emergency Operations Center goes into full activation mode on Thursday at 8 am. The city will hold the first of five news conferences starting tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
