Middleburg man drowns while paddleboarding at Huguenot, report says

A 64-year-old Middleburg man died after he fell off his paddleboard Sunday at Huguenot Park, a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report said.

Lawrence Lee LaClair, 64, was paddleboarding with a female companion when he fell, she told JSO.

The woman went out to retrieve the paddleboard, and LaClair was treading water.

At some point, LaClair began to struggle in the water. His companion could not reach LaClair because of the strength of the current, JSO said.

Two beachgoers were able to go into the water and pull LaClair onto the beach, where they tried to perform CPR.

A nearby lifeguard assisted with CPR, but LaClair was pronounced dead after being transported to UF Health.
