19-year-old charged with shooting Jacksonville detective

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 19-year-old is charged with attempted murder after he shot a detective three times while the detective's teen son was inside the car Wednesday.

Police said an undercover narcotics agent was taking his son to school when he saw Kevin Rojas driving erratically on Collins Road.

The detective put on a tactical vest and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Rojas fled. After a short pursuit, Rojas got out of his car and began shooting at the detective on the railroad tracks on Collins Road.

Rojas fired four bullets at the detective and took off on foot. The detective was hit three times, once in the leg, chest and hand.

The detective returned fired at Rojas but none of the nine rounds hit Rojas.

The detective called for backup on the radio as the suspect stole a truck -- which was running -- from a nearby business.

The business owners flagged down two responding officers and told them a description of the truck and the direction it was headed.

Rojas crashed the truck into a neighbor's home, kicked down the door of his own home and ran into his house on Oak Crossing Drive West. Two officers who were pursuing Rojas fired at him eight times.

He was hit by three bullets and arrested. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and two charges of assault on a law enforcement officer, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office inmate sheet.

Before the shooting, Rojas got into an argument with his girlfriend and threatened to hurt her -- and himself.

Amy Wyss said her son didn't mean to shoot the detective, he "just flipped."

She said she was not aware of issues between her son and his girlfriend and said he takes medication.

The undercover narcotics detective's will not be released to protect his identity and family, JSO said.
