No bond for Jax Beach woman accused of murdering her mother

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — The Jacksonville Beach woman accused of murdering her mother before fleeing with her 7-year-old son appeared before a judge in Orlando Sunday morning.

The judge denied bail for Marla D'Andrea, determining that she would be held in the Orange County jail until being transferred to Duval County.

D'Andrea is charged in the death of her mother who was identified Saturday as 67 year old Barbara A. D'Andrea of Atlantic Beach.

The suspect and her 7-year-old Luke Gjelal were found at Orlando International Airport just before 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The pair been the subjects of a statewide search after Barbara D'Andrea's body was discovered inside an Jacksonville Beach apartment at 10th Street and 1st Avenue North earlier in the day.

Marla D'Andrea was booked into the Orange County jail early Saturday where she awaits a court appearance and extradition back to Duval County.

Police say Luke is in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services which is working to make custody arrangements.

Police did not know if D'Andrea was trying to fly out of OIA with her son. Investigators say D'Andrea has custody of her son and that's why an Amber Alert was not issued.

In a news release Saturday, Sgt. T. F. Crumley said several Jacksonville Beach Police detectives traveled to Orlando Friday night and charged the 40 year old with the murder of her mother.

Police have not said how the woman was killed.

“I’m having a hard time understanding who can do something like that and the fact that it’s so close to my home,” said neighbor Lori Deputy.

She also told Action News Jax that there was tension within the family.

“There was a lot of yelling and cursing, at night, generally late at night, like the other morning, like 3 in the morning. What I know is that the grandmother had custody and I realized that recently, the mother did get custody back, from DCF,” Deputy said.

Action News Jax uncovered recent court records for D’Andrea.

She has two paternity issues in court with two different men. It’s a situation neighbors said they just don’t understand.

“I seen these people, I seen this grandmother with this child and she had taken very good care of him,” Deputy said.
