Neighbors urge city to clean up 'house of horrors' Southside property

UPDATE: The city officially condemned the property on July 21. For more on this story, check out CBS47 at 5.

Russell Tillis, 55, may be in jail awaiting trial ... but his neighbors’ troubles aren’t over yet.

Neighbor Dave Eichenlaub lives just feet away from Tillis’ home. He said the overgrown weeds are becoming too much to ignore.

“I'm tired of it. I'm sick of it,” said Eichenlaub.

Action News Jax reported Friday how Tillis’ home, which has been sitting empty and without power for the past few months, has become the eyesore of Bowden Circle East.

After our story aired, Eichenlaub said someone came out and mowed the front yard but left the backyard untouched, with weeds growing taller than the fence.

“We've got to put up with this all the time. There's snakes, rats, everything,” said Eichenlaub.

There are three active code enforcement violation cases on the home. The city said it inspected the home Tuesday and there’s another inspection scheduled at the home on July 18.

Eichenlaub said he just wants to see it all go away.

“I want to see it torn down, like it was supposed to be,” said Eichenlaub.

Eichenlaub said he's trying to sell his home and is worried about his property's value.

Tillis remains in jail awaiting trial on several charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer.

In February, police found human remains on Tillis’ property but they still have not identified who the person was.

Tillis is due in court for a pretrial hearing on July 21.
