New 'diverging diamond' project in Nassau County aims to minimize traffic

The Florida Department of Transportation plans to develop an intersection that will be unique to the Nassau County area.

The project will consist of reconstruction and widening 2.2 miles of A1A from west of I-95 to west of Still Quarters Road to create the diamond shape of the interchange.

The traffic from A1A that has been passing under I-95 will now be on the opposite side of the road. Transportation officials said diverging diamonds have been shown to be safer and more efficient for drivers.

The will project increase the roadway to six lanes and include raised medians, bicycle lanes and sidewalks.

The project contract costs approximately $40 million. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2020.

FDOT will host an open house to answer questions and concerns about the project Feb. 23 at FSCJ’s Nassau Center on William Burgess Boulevard.
