Pastor facing child molestation charges remains in jail

A controversial local pastor accused of molesting a child will spend more time in jail.

A judge did not set bond for Ken Adkins when he appeared in court on Monday afternoon.

Adkins was quiet and subdued as he appeared in the court room with handcuffs on his wrist.

Adkins is facing felony charges of child molestation and aggravated child molestation charges.

“This case wreaks. It smells bad,” said Adkins' attorney Attorney Kevin Gough.

Gough said the charges are the result of allegations involving a boy under the age of 16 sometime between Jan. 1 and Dec. 15 of 2010.

The judge said a Superious Court judge will set bond at a later date.

Adkins' wife was not inside the court room because she had to work.

Action News Jax stopped by Adkins’ church, where is wife is serving at the interim pastor.

No one was there and the lights were off. The property owner told Action News Jax the lights were cut off this month because the church didn’t pay rent.

“This is a very serious matter and the defendant is entitled due process,” Gough said.

He said he’s going to do everything he can to get his client a fair trial.

He said the six year gap will make it tough to fight these charges.

“Obviously it makes it very difficult to prepare for a hearing when the event is 6 years old, and allegedly covers an 11-month period of time,” Gough said.

That’s why Gough said he filed a subpoena to the District’s Attorney’s office on Friday.

He is demanding the victim be in court at the next appearance. He said that’s the only way to get to the bottom of the accusations.

“They are withholding the address and contact information for the victim, and without it, the defense cannot issue a subpoena," Gough said. "The District Attorney is trying or maintaining some kind of legal fiction that they weren’t served, so they can avoid producing the victim at Friday’s hearing."

Action News Jax stopped by the District Attorney’s Office and asked if they received the subpoena from Adkins’ lawyer.

They originally told our Larry Spruill they didn’t have a comment.

When we asked them again, they changed their story and said something was filed but not through proper protocol.

Adkins next hearing is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m. at the Glynn County Courthouse.
