Pharmacy set to open in under-served Jacksonville community

When you get sick, you need to be able to get your prescription quickly. That’s why the idea of the New Town Pharmacy was born.

“One of the things he wanted to focus on was health care and the pharmaceutical industry in this community,” marketing director Dwight Brisbane said.

The New Town-Moncrief community is in the heart of a food desert. There are no viable grocery stores around -- or pharmacists for that matter. A Jacksonville native and local pharmacist saw that need and decided to launch this pharmacy.

If all goes according to plan, it will open in January.

“If you think about the demographics of the area, there's a lot of senior citizens, there's a lot of people who go outside the area to get their medication -- so what better way to help those citizens than to have a pharmacy located within walking distance, within bus distance,” Brisbane continued.

Another big benefit of New Town is the delivery service. If for whatever reason, patients can't get out of their home or workplace, the pharmacy will deliver medications just like this right to their doorstep or their home office. That will be available not just in Jacksonville and surrounding areas, but eventually, the entire state.

Statistics show, it's needed. In this immediate area, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease are common.

With New Town, patients will not only get these -- they'll also be educated on wellness and what they put in their body.

“We’re not just looking at providing medication. We’re looking at providing the whole thing. Kind of like a holistic approach to health care."

The pharmacy plans to hold an open house soon. In the meantime, if you'd like more information, you can call 904-962-8828.
