Red Cross, Jacksonville church team up to help Irma victims

Red Cross is teaming up with a Jacksonville church to help those affected by Hurricane Irma.

The Celebration Church on the Southside will be used as a command center.

Three locations across Jacksonville are open for Red Cross supply drop off and storage.

Out in the community, teams are helping families clean up after the storm, removing debris and down trees.

Action News Jax spoke with a team helping an elderly couple remove a downed tree.

The couple said they were beyond grateful.

“A guy come up and said, ‘How about your tree?.’ I said, ‘Well, it’s there. I gotta have something done to it,’” Ray Boatwright said. “He said, ‘Well, we will cut it up.”

Boatwright told them he didn’t have money to pay them.

“He said, ‘We ain’t asking for no money. We will do it for free,’” Boatwright said.

Patricia Boatwright called the group angels from heaven.

“They just don’t know they’re angels from heaven. There’s just no other way to put it.”

Pastor Stovall Weems said the church is here to serve.

“Jesus said he came here not be served, but to serve,” Weems said. “So we want to let the community know we are here for them.”

The church says if anyone needs help with cleanup or wants to volunteer to visit http://www.celebration.org/
