Judge sets new status hearing date for Rep. Corrine Brown, chief of staff

A federal judge says Rep. Corrine Brown will have to be back in court in Jacksonville in two weeks.

Earlier this month, Rep. Brown and her Chief of Staff Ronnie Simmons pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges.

Rep. Brown and Simmons were inside the courtroom, but neither one of them spoke to the media or answered our questions.

With her head down and not responding to any of our questions, Rep. Brown walked inside the Federal Courthouse with her team of attorneys beside her.

Tuesday, Brown and Simmons appeared in front of a judge for a status hearing after they both pleaded not guilty to fraud and conspiracy earlier this month.

It’s a hearing allowing both parties the opportunity to ask questions, discuss evidence or possibly settle the case.

Our Action News Jax cameras were not allowed inside the courtroom, but attorneys for Rep. Brown and Simmons asked the judge to delay the status hearing, and the judge agreed.

The new status hearing is set for August 9 at 3 p.m.

Brown faces a maximum of 357 years in prison and nearly $5 million in fines, if she is convicted on all charges.

Simmons faces a maximum of 355 years in prison and nearly $5 million in fines, if he is convicted.

The trial is set for September 6.
