Report: Unknown men tried to lure girl with candy near St. Augustine school

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is investigating a report of two men trying to use candy to lure an 8-year-old girl into an SUV.

The incident happened Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at the Whispering Pines apartment complex next to Osceola Elementary School.

The girl escaped by running towards a set of stairs when a passenger in the SUV chased her, a police report said. The girl told police the subject offered her candy from the trunk of his vehicle and that he became upset when she refused the offer.

One of the suspects is described as a black male, around 6 feet tall and 240 pounds with a buzzcut-style haircut. The vehicle was described as an older-model SUV, dark blue with heavily-tinted windows. Residents said they had never seen the vehicle in the area before.

The child's story was corroborated by another child, a boy, who claimed the same thing happened to him. He ran to his apartment when approached, the boy told police.
