Snake thief caught after trying to sell reptiles on Craigslist

Deputies said Aaron Devereaux is now behind bars accused of stealing 13 snakes from a pet stop in Callahan.

CALLAHAN, Fla. — Manager Gin Dubberly said at first they thought the snakes had gotten out, but then realized that too many were gone.

Dubberly said they called the Sheriff’s Office to report what happened.

She said she then decided to check Craigslist.

“That's the first place people do anything and you can kind of,” Dubberly said.

She said the next thing she knew, pictures of her snakes started popping up and she recognized one of the snakes from its scars that are almost a blue color.

“It was Alice, the first one he posted, thank God, and she happens to be wrapped around her tree limb,” Dubberly said.
Deputies pretended to buy the snakes from Devereaux and arrested him.
Dubberly says she believes Devereaux came in through the window where a parrot named Johnny hangs out.
“So he had to come in during business hours a unlock it,” Devereaux said.
She also believes Devereaux got the snakes out by unscrewing the locks on the snake’s cages.
Eleven have been recovered and two are still missing.
Action News learned Devereaux was recently released from prison for previously stealing trailers and selling them on Craigslist, too.
He is now back behind bars, charged with burglary, grand theft and dealing stolen property.
