Students add 'racial tension,' wear black, white shirts after fight at Oceanway Middle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville parents took their children out of class Friday after learning about a fight that led to reported racial tensions at the school.

According to a release from Duval County Public Schools, three students at Oceanway Middle School got into an altercation during lunch. Those students were separated by administrators and their parents were notified.

The next day, students showed up in colored t-shirts that administrators said showed support for students involved in the fight.

"Out of support to those students who were fighting, some other students unfortunately added racial tension to the school campus by wearing opposing black and white shirts," the school district said in a statement.

As a result, the school increased security on campus to reduce the opportunity for more altercations and are discussing proactive measures to eliminate unrest amongst the student body.

School administrators are planning student activities to "foster a stronger diverse learning environment."
