Teen dies after shooting at The Jacksonville Landing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville police are talking to 30 witnesses after a deadly shooting Monday afternoon at The Jacksonville Landing.

The shooting injured a 13-year-old and killed 16-year-old Khamoi Petersen. Jacksonville police said Petersen died nine days before his 17th birthday.

Police said the 13-year-old's wounds were not life-threatening.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the two boys were shot in front of the building. The shooting also shattered glass on the building, which is now boarded up.

Sheriff Mike Williams said the participants all knew one another. Police believe it was a random event in response to something that happened Monday afternoon, though they said it might be related to a shooting last week.

JSO said the shooting started as a fight which escalated into gunfire. They said it's possible that it was in retaliation for a shooting during the Art Walk on Jan. 4, just blocks away from The Jacksonville Landing.

Anyone who has any information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS. You can remain anonymous and receive a possible reward of up to $3,000.

The Jacksonville Landing is expected to open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, as normal, said owner Toney Sleiman.

The Landing routinely hires off-duty officers to work, Williams said.

There was no event scheduled at the Landing and staffing at the Landing was appropriate for the afternoon, Williams said. He said officials will look into the issue.

"We are going to do everything we can do to make people feel safe downtown. That's our goal," Williams said. "That's what we want to happen, and we are going to need cooperation from the public for that to happen."

The family said there will be a balloon release from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Jacksonville Landing.
