Melton's family tells Fox affiliate WZTV that he was protecting his wife Heather when he was hit.

"At this point, I'm in complete disbelief and despair," Heather Gulish Melton told the station in a statement Monday.

"I don't know what to say. Sonny was the most kind-hearted, loving man I have ever met," Melton said. "He saved my life and lost his."
