Thousands sign petition to save popular St. Augustine Beach market

Thousands of supporters have signed the online petition since Tuesday to keep a popular St. Augustine Beach Market from shutting down.

The Wednesday Market hosted at the St. Johns County Pier Park and might be shut down by the county because of its high financial cost, the St. Augustine Record reported.

The story reported that a St. Johns County’s top official isn't planning to recommend to continue the county's funding that allows the event at Pier Park parking lot.

The current agreement allows the the civic association to use some of the county's Ocean Beach & Fishing Pier parking lot to run the markets at Pier Park parking lot.

That agreement will expire July 31 without County Commission action to extend the contract, the St. Augustine Record reports.

However, many residents have responded to the potential shutdown by taking part in the petition, which was created last week.

Individuals, including local artists, have commented their concerns on the threat of the market's closure.

"I have enjoyed going to the Wednesday Market and Music by the Sea for almost five years now," said a voter under the username of Jenna G. She said she is a local artist and anticipated on setting up a booth at the market.

"I am very disappointed to hear that this may not be possible," Jenna wrote. "The market is not only a wonderful weekly event that brings the community together, but also a way for local artists, farmers and craftsmen to make a living. Please do not crush my dream that I have been working so hard for!"

The market runs every Wednesday from 8 .m.-12:30 p.m.
