A high school senior was killed Wednesday night after he lost control of his car in St. Johns County.

Michael Sonognini, known as Jarek, was a senior at Creekside High School.

Troopers said he was not wearing a seat belt when he crashed a 2001 Lexus IS300 at 8:30 p.m.

They are not sure why he drove into the center median and southbound lanes of Longleaf Pine Parkway south of Greenbriar Road.

His car flipped and he was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Carolyn Duncan pulled up to the crash site right after it happened and saw Sonognini lying on the ground.

“We got around that car, and pulled over immediately and jumped out,” she said. “My husband jumped out to see if he could do CPR, and I called 911.”

Duncan said good Samaritans tried performing CPR for 20 minutes before paramedics arrived.

Action News Jax learned Sonognini had been helping out with a service project at his church not far away.

Friends say he planned to head to a bonfire Wednesday night.

A GoFundMe page for Sonognini says he had three sisters.

"A young man who seemed to have a quiet confidence about himself, always quick witted, flashing a smile that had the power to change your day," the page says of him.

Friends are remembering him on social media.
