In 911 calls, witnesses said driver drank before deadly Nassau crash

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Victims in a deadly Nassau County car crash were heard screaming and crying in the background of 911 calls.

Action News Jax received the 911 calls from the crash, which happened Oct. 22. The driver is suspected of drinking before driving off with kids in the car, including two of her sons.

Both of her boys died in the crash.

Dozens of witnesses called 911 after hearing the sounds of a crash -- and the cries from those involved.

Witness: "Please hurry. Oh my God. [screaming]."

Witnesses who called 911 were desperate to help, and in the background you can hear people screaming and crying.

Witness: "Oh my God. The car is upside down. Oh my God, it's my friend's … [screaming] We told her not to drive and she did anyways. There's a bunch of kids in the car. Oh my God."

Friends say minutes after leaving a children’s Halloween party, Tonya Capallia-Eason slammed her SUV into a utility pole, causing it to flip with eight children inside.

Witness: "Oh, my God. We told her not to drive and she did anyways."

911 Operator: "Was she drinking?"

Witness: "Yes, she was, and she wouldn't listen to us and she drove off anyways."

The crash killed Capallia Eason's young boys, 8-year-old Nehemiah and 9-year-old Nick.

Witness: "There are people stuck in the car, and there are some that ain't breathing."

The Florida Highway Patrol said alcohol was a factor in the crash. However, no one has been charged at this time.

Witness: "You have one trapped in the car and you have three laying outside of it."

One of the passengers, Trinity Hancock, told Action News Jax that she was thrown out of a window and was thankful to be alive.

Trinity told Action News Jax that the other five children in the SUV underwent surgery for various injuries. Some of the victims are still in critical condition.

Action News Jax learned Capallia -Eason had minor injuries and was reportedly released from the hospital Monday.

One family friend told Action News Jax that her three other children were also in the SUV along with her neighbor’s children.

“She just made a bad choice and obviously the results indicated that, you know,” the friend said.

Capallia-Eason was described as a mother who loves her kids unconditionally and wouldn’t initially put them in harm’s way.

“She was a happy, caring mom,” the friend said. “She took the kids to the beach. Everything was always about the kids.”
