Video of dog chained to cage hauled by moving vehicle in Flagler County goes viral

A St. Augustine dog owner is facing backlash for allowing his dog to ride on the highway on top of a cage that was being hauled on a trailer.

A Flagler County woman that passed him on the highway posted the video on Facebook. It's been shared more than 6,000 times.

Action News Jax spoke to the owner of the dog after he called the Action News Jax newsroom.

He didn’t want to speak on camera but he claims he did nothing wrong and said the dog prefers to ride on top of the cage instead of inside with the other animals that are visible in the video.

It’s difficult to determine how fast the car was going by just looking at the video but the signs we passed on Interstate 95 show that the speed limit is 70 miles per hour.

The Operations Manager of the St. Johns County Division of Animal Control, Paul Studivant, said they’re investigating along with Flagler County Animal Control.

“Very disturbing to see,” said Studivant.

In St. Johns County, it’s illegal to transport uncovered dogs. They have to be secured inside a pet carrier or cage.

Studivant said a wellness check was conducted on the animals Thursday and will provide the owner with a copy of the ordinance.

If it’s determined that the infraction happened in St. Johns County, the owner may be issued a $93 citation.
