Video: Panting dog locked in hot car in Jacksonville parking lot

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News Jax obtained video of a dog locked inside a hot car for nearly an hour outside a Jacksonville supermarket.

Jennifer Thies said she recorded the video Sunday afternoon at Harveys on University Boulevard..

“If this were to ever happen again, I probably would just break the window,” Thies said.

Thies said at least 48 minutes went by before anyone came back to the Nissan Sentra.

“The dog was hopping around in the car, but you could tell he was hot,” Thies said. “He was panting very hard.”

Thies said she called the police.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the complainant canceled the call before officers responded.

First Alert meteorologist Arielle Nixon called Sunday’s afternoon temperatures "dangerously hot."

“Sunday was one of the hottest days we've had all year. The high reached 95 degrees,” Nixon said.  “A car heats up just like an oven. On a hot day when temperatures are in the 90s outside, the car heats up over a period of time. So over 45 minutes that dog could've been in the car, the temperature inside the car may have reach up to 130, even 135 degrees.”

Jacksonville veterinarian Rebecca Williams of Deerwood Animal Clinic sent Action News Jax this assessment of the situation:

"This dog is obviously showing signs of heat stress due to the panting in an enclosed vehicle in June. Even in the shade, temperatures can quickly rise above safe levels for pets. Treating heat stroke can be difficult and expensive. Many pets require transfusions and prolonged hospital stays. Even with aggressive care, many pets can die or have long term damage as a result. Luckily, it is easily prevented by leaving the air on or just not leaving the pets in parked automobiles. Hopefully this pup was OK, but next time it might not be as lucky."
