Woman pinned by hit-and-run driver home from hospital

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A 19-year-old St. Augustine woman is finally out of the hospital, two weeks after she was struck by a car while pumping gas.

Action News Jax reporter Erica Bennett was there as Amira Kennedy was released from Brooks Rehab in Jacksonville and made it home. She’s in a wheelchair, so a ramp had to be added so she can get inside.

This whole thing started when she was simply pumping gas at the Kangaroo station at State Road 206 and U.S. 1.

A truck was barreling straight toward her.

“I tried to get out of the way moving forward. I know I couldn’t make it, so I tried to move backwards. Didn’t make it either,” she explained.

Kennedy was pinned and left with four fractures in her pelvis, a broken tailbone and a deep gash on her leg.

“When I fell, the first thing I looked at was to make sure I had both of my legs. Then I remember being in excruciating pain and knew I couldn’t stand up. I kept thinking that they’re going to stop. So, they stopped for about 5 or 7 seconds. We made eye contact and then they just drove away,” said Kennedy.

The woman was driving a white pickup truck, possibly a Chevy, with some type of lettering on the side.

A man came to Kennedy’s aid and helped call 911 when it happened. Kennedy’s interest in being an EMT may have helped reduce her injuries that day. Because of her training, she was able to tell that good Samaritan how to prop her, treat her wound and not move her until paramedics arrived.

She said she’s grateful for him, and hopes the driver also has a soft spot and comes forward.

“I don’t understand how you could leave like that when you don’t know what state they’re in, but I also understand it could have been really scary as well,” Kennedy said.

If you know anything about Kennedy's hit-and-run, call police. Right now, authorities are working to find and analyze any surveillance video.
