World Golf Village employee taken to hospital after golfer punched him, police say

Joshua Gibson

A St. Augustine man was arrested after he repeatedly punched an employee at the Slammer and Squire golf course at World Gold Village, police said.

On Wednesday at about 3:15 p.m., the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of an aggravated battery at the golf course.

Jordan Ebanks, 26, a Slammer and Squire employee, said in the police report that he was working at the cart collection point of the golf course when a golf cart with two men bypassed the drop-off area.

Ebanks said he yelled at the men, one of them identified as Joshua Gibson, 38, to try to collect the cart from them.

He said he was frustrated as the cart kept going and he called the cart's driver an expletive.

Ebanks said he did not yell the word, identified in the police report as a 10-letter expletive, but mumbled it.

Another golfer -- reportedly Gibson's brother-in-law -- said he overheard what Ebanks said and told the employee's manager.

Ebanks said he apologized and everyone parted ways, the police report said.

A few minutes later, Ebanks said Gibson confronted him. Ebanks said he apologized to Gibson, but Gibson punched him multiple times, police reported.

Ebanks was taken to Baptist South to receive stitches.

According to Gibson, he said he approached Ebanks after Gibson's brother-in-law told him what Ebanks said.

Gibson said Ebanks "squared off" on him and "threw the first punch."

A Slammer and Squire employee said he saw Gibson shove Ebanks. The employee said Gibson punched first and hit Ebanks several times until he fell to the ground.

Gibson was taken to St. Johns County Jail, where he remains on $2,500 bond.
