Yulee tornado: Neighbors filing insurance claims, cleaning up debris

People in Yulee are still clearing trees and patching roofs, their homes damaged by a tornado on Thursday that had maximum winds of up to 100 miles per hour.

Insurance adjusters have been busy and will continue to be busy through the next week. Many homeowners already have estimates from their insurance companies, but others are waiting until Monday and Tuesday for adjusters to still visit their homes.

Many of those who are still waiting for insurance adjusters have been working hard to clean up what they can by themselves for the last 2 days.

Throughout certain areas Yulee two days after the tornado hit, progress is being made in cleaning up the mess it left behind. Trees and debris have been cleared from the roads and some from yards.

“We have been out here for the last 2 days nonstop all night long, just cleaning up,” said Leslie Baker.

We first showed you Baker’s home Friday. Their new camper was destroyed and several trees were uprooted on their property on Dick King Road. Her family also ended up rescuing 5 baby squirrels.

“They were actually in the flower pot when the tree fell and I kept hearing screeching and I looked down and there was a flower pot full of squirrels,” Baker said.

They are waiting for their insurance company to give them an estimate Monday. They believe there’s at least $20,000 dollars in damage.

Several of their neighbors are also facing the same problems. A home down the road just had an insurance adjuster come to their home. That homeowner tells us that there is $3,700 dollars in damage to their roof, another $3,000 to their carport and $10,000 for what used to be a barn.

Another street over on haddock, Larry Davis said his insurance company will have to repair his roof. He also had his back fence torn down but said that he feels lucky considering what others are going through.

“He said that there was a lot of stuff in the area, he was leaving here and had to go to Meadowfield and he said there he had 10 appraisals due that afternoon after he left here,” Davis said.

In Meadowfield, a lot of people have their homes covered in tarps until their roofs can be repaired.

The worst damage we saw Saturday was on Dick King Road and as for the people who live here, they are in good spirits and thankful for those who have been helping them
