High school cheerleader charged in homeless man's death

A high school cheerleader from the San Diego area faces felony accessory to murder charges for her alleged role in the beating death of a homeless man two months ago.

Hailey Suder, 18, was in tears Monday when she was told after pleading not guilty that she would be held on $100,000 bail.

According to the Los Angeles Times, brothers Austin Mostrong, 20, and Preston Mostrong, 19, have admitted to their involvement in the beating of 50-year-old homeless man George Lowery near the camp he was staying at with his wife and daughter in Santee.

Lowery reportedly suffered a stroke and two brain hemorrhages as a result of the beating. His daughter, Katey Torres, told the Times her mother found him “brutally beaten, bloody, tied up, face down and unconscious. Covered up to die.”

“Although he did not have much, he was always giving,” she said. “Anyone he came across loved his personality and he was always talking to people. Anyone he saw that needed help or just needed a smile he’d be there lifting your spirits. If someone was in need he would do what he could to help, no matter how hard the task. If he came across good fortune, he shared it.”

Lowery was killed in the spot he had gone fishing with his family over the years.

He died days later at a hospital. Lowery and his wife, Penny, had been married 25 years.

Suder was dating one of the Mostrong brothers allegedly involved in the killing, though it’s not clear which one. She was scheduled to graduate this month from Santana High School.

Suder faces three years and eight months in prison upon conviction, according to KSWB, and has a preliminary hearing set for July 5.
