Neighbors concerned about safety of mostly unpaved North Jacksonville road

Neighbors said they are concerned a Jacksonville road is becoming a hazard for drivers.

Parts of Grover Road in North Jacksonville aren’t even paved. The majority of Grover Road’s 2.6-mile stretch is nicely paved until drivers get to the middle of it.

"I think they either need to block it off, or they need to pave it," neighbor Carol Eggleston said.

Eggleston has lived on the road for the past six years, and she said GPS always sends people through the unpaved road to get to her house, although Action News Jax found a dead-end sign before turning onto Grover Road.

"I mean, people have gone down part way, and there's a hole that their car sinks in," Eggleston said.

Action News Jax reached out to the city to see who is responsible for maintaining this stretch and what was being done about it.

Action News Jax was told the offices closed early for the holiday.

The unpaved road is full of ditches that, Eggleston said, fill with water when it rains. But besides rough patches and water holes, Eggleston said it takes her about 20 minutes to drive her son to school, which could be cut in half if she didn’t have to avoid the stretch of unpaved road.

"Where if it was paved, we can go right down the road and be at school," Eggleston said.

However, neighbor Tom Wilson said he wouldn’t change the unpaved road, if it were up to him.

"There's not so much traffic through here," said Wilson.

The president of Jacksonville Association of Firefighters said because of the difficulty of Grover Road, firefighters have drawn their own maps to get around the area.
