Carjacking suspect shot during police pursuit identified

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released more information about an officer-involved shooting Wednesday and how it's connected to more than one crime.

The first crime happened Sunday when a person was carjacked near 11th Avenue and Soutel Drive.

On Wednesday, police were following up on a tip related to the carjacking. The suspect, Dwayne Wimberly, started running away from police.

Police say they fired three shots when they realized the suspect was reaching for his waistband.

One shot struck him in the ankle. During the chase, the suspect dropped something in the grass, but officers didn't stop to get it right away.

“We were able to later recover a firearm at the scene, that firearm was determined to be stolen in a burglary from 2014,” said Chief Mike Bruno of the Sheriff's Office.

Wimberly was taken to the hospital for treatment.

He's charged with possession of a gun by a convicted felon and possession of a stolen firearm.
