City of Jacksonville to dismiss lawsuit against police and fire pension fund

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News Jax has learned the City of Jacksonville will dismiss its lawsuit against the police and fire pension fund.

The suit filed against the funds former executive director, John Keane, and two others, claimed the board exceeded its authority by creating a special pension for senior staffers, a pension that had a higher payout then the general employees’ pension plan.

Late Thursday morning, letters were sent to the three special pension recipients saying their pensions will be changed to reflect G.E.P.P Benefits.

Sources estimate on Keane's pension alone, taxpayers will save about $43,000 a year.

Mayor Lenny Curry released the following statement: "My order to stop payment on the unauthorized pension is the right thing to do to protect taxpayers."
